Victoria Nunnally posted a condolence

Hello, Mom. It is your eldest, daughter, Vicky. Just wanted to remind you of how very loved you were and are by me. One of my former students sent me a text message yesterday that uplifted my spirits and helped me to feel a little better about your leaving. Here is a little bit of what she wrote to me - "remember that our mothers left us with a box. I like to call it Pandora. It holds all the lessons and memories she shared with you. When nights get late and the heart is heavy, reach into that box and take out a lesson or memory she taught you and smile." I dedicate this to my siblings, Lallabrigida (Ernest), Titus (Milagros), Angela (Willie), Debra, Juanita, my husband Luther Bernard, and our children and grandchildren. Keep your Pandora box close to your heart and open it often. Mom/Grandmom has left us with so many wonerful memories and life lessons.

IN REMEMBRANCE OF NELLIE GRACE COOPER
“A CELEBRATION OF LIFE’ February 2, 2019
Sunrise, Wednesday, March 4, 1941 Sunset, Wednesday, January 23, 2019
“A giggle, a smile, a special pat on the back, a warm hug, a kiss on the cheek, words of encouragement were all languages of love, Nellie Grace Cooper shared with her family and others throughout her life. These are special memories we will all cherish and hold dear throughout our own life.”
Nellie Grace Cooper was the youngest of 12 children born to Elizabeth Brown Cooper and Reverend James Cooper in Sylvania, Georgia. In heaven, she will be joining her sisters and brothers Isabelle, Bessie Lou, Julia, Mary, Georgia Ann, Eugene (Maybelle (d)), Willie (Alma (d)), Morris, and her ex-husband, long time friend and father of her children, Roscoe Willie (Barbara (a)).
Nellie was often thought of as a little spitfire at a young age being outspoken and petite. Nellie was quiet, but the little lady knew how to defend herself. She was a quite a talker our Nellie and one of the stories she told had us dying laughing. A bigger boy was always teasing Nellie at school , so one day she had enough. So she bit him hard. That boy never bothered her again. Being the youngest of twelve, she grew up with her niece and nephews and at 8 years old was their babysitter. My grandfather was a sharecropper in Sylvania, Georgia, working beside her father in the fields, she grew to have an excellent work ethic at a young age which she carried throughout her life. She was educated in her early years in Savannah, and Philadelphia. She finished her high school education in South Jersey.
Nellie worked at Pennsylvania Hospital, as a housekeeper, Our Lady of Rosary Catholic School, as a teacher’s aide, Accurate Inventory, as an inventory auditor, at St. Joseph College, as a Companion to elderly Catholic Priests, and in a Records Factory as an assembly line worker. Finally, she retired from Vineland Developmental Center in New Jersey, where she worked for more than 30 years, as a rehabilitation specialist in a group home for woman with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Nellie left her long time husband and father of her four children to become a single mother. She worked hard in the years that followed, but never looked back. She pushed and encouraged her children to be the best they could be at whatever their chosen path. She defended her children and was very proud of them and her grandchildren.
Nellie, was an attractive lady who was a classy dresser. Being an astute mother, she enjoyed dressing her children smartly, as well. She was a strong and vivacious Catholic. Nellie was a vocalist in St Rosa Lima’s Catholic Church Choir of Philadelphia, PA. While her children were attending Our Lady of Rosary Catholic School, in Philadelphia, PA, she became a member of “The Irish Daughters Affiliation of Catholics of America”. Later, she also taught CCD Instruction as a Catchiest teacher at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hammonton, NJ for many years while three of her grandchildren were attending the program.
Because our beloved Nellie, was a comprehensive listener, people often sought her out for advice. She was also very encouraging, loved all her children and grandchildren unconditionally and could keep a confidence well. She was intelligent, charismatic, and a go getter using linguistics, as well as, her verbal skills to do battle on paper and in person. Many politicians, priests, principals, doctors, lawyers and businesses which she dealt with were in awe of Nellie, because of those same strengths. She could also be called a Mrs. Fixer-Upper. Being a single mother, Nellie often took on the task of being a handywoman around her home, fixing electric plugs, putting up Christmas lights, mending, sewing and making clothes.
Nellie never thought any chore was too much for her, if she could possibly fix something herself, she would do it. Nellie made costumes for her children when they were in school plays. She made a beautiful pilgrims outfit one year for her two eldest daughters and many other outfits for her children growing up. It’s remarkable how her creativity can be seen now in her children and grandchildren.
She enjoyed reading, dancing, singing, tending to her garden and plants, writing poetry, watching television soap operas, spending time with her family and sketching. Travelling was another one of her loves, she visited St Croix, Canada, Las Vegas, Hawaii, New Orleans, Ohio, New York, California, Michigan and Cancun, just to name a few places. Above all, Nellie was a strong matriarch and backbone of her family.
To continue celebrating her life, she leaves behind her sisters Dorothy (Pete), Monakay (Ulysses (d)), and James Jr (Carlotta). Nellie also leaves behind her children, Debbie (Jonathan), Victoria (Luther Bernard), Lallabrigida (Ernest), Titus (Millie), Angela (Willie), Juanita. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Conneila, Melissa, Angel, Bernard, Syrieta (Steve), La Tia (Ryan), Colleen (Robert), Krystle (Eddie), Natasha (Jehri), Salaam, Jasmine, Christina, Emmanuel, Julius, Mark, Shawn, Omar, Willie, Juwan, Sir-Issak, Maximus, Lucas and Logan. Her great-grandchildren Tylid, Moses, Joanieve, Justin, Julius, Lallabrigida, Peyton, Jaylin, Stevie, Drew, Kels, Charles, Taylor, Jaziel, Catalina, Cash, Josue, Zora, MiAmor, Isabella, Kaylin, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.
Nellie Grace Cooper will be greatly missed for her love, wisdom, caring and dedication to her family. She will forever be our guiding light.
This poem, “Missing Mama” by Claudia Lee (2008) is dedicated to Nellie Cooper’s children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren, as well as all children who are missing their Mama.
“Missing Mama”
© By Claudia Lee (2008)
I awake each morning to start a new day,
But the pain of losing you never goes away.
I go about the things I have to do,
And as the hours pass I think again of you.
I want to call you and just hear your voice.
Then I remember that I have no choice
for you are not there and now my heart cries
Just to see you again to tell you goodbye.
To say, Mama I love you and I always will
And hope that much of you, in me you've instilled.
The day that you left I just didn't know
that you were going where I couldn't go.
And now all my memories of you are so dear
but gosh, how I miss you and wish you were here.
Who now can hear me when I need to cry?
It's so hard to tell you, "Mama Goodbye."
Someday I know all will be well
And I'll see you again with stories to tell
Of how you were missed and how we have grown
And how good it is to finally be home.
Until then my memories of you I'll keep near
And I'll pass them on to those who are dear.
I miss you, Mama!
