Obituary of Horace L. Jackson, Sr.

Please share a memory of Horace to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Dancing into glory on October 22, 2017, Horace L. Jackson Sr., peacefully departed his earthly home.  Quite befitting of the celebration of New Years, on January 1, 1938, Horace Lee Jackson "arrived for the festivities of life" to the late Reverend Freddie and Annie Jackson in Courtland, VA.  In addition to his parents, Horace was preceded in death by his three brothers, Reginald A. Jackson, William A. Jackson Sr., and Dr. James R. Jackson.  He accepted Christ at a young age and was baptized at Hickory Hill Baptist Church in Yale, VA.  He received his early education at the Sussex County Training School and continued his education at Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia.

At the age of 15, he developed an earnest sense of responsibility, driving the local school bus for the school he also attended.  While driving the school bus his love of cars intensified.  In 1960 he joined his oldest brother, Pernell, in Philadelphia, PA, and made it his residence.  By May 1961 he met and married Betty J. Evans.  To this union five children were born.  They resided as a family in Sharon Hill, PA and lastly relocated to Williamstown, NJ.  Betty and Horace continued a strong bond throughout his lifetime.

Always a hard worker, he owned and operated H Jackson & Son for 40 + years.  He was not only a business owner, but an entrepreneur and inventor.  There was no task, he was not creative enough to complete or attempt.

Horace was known for his jovial spirit, often hosting parties and holidays at the family home.  As a father he was dedicated to nurturing, supporting and loving his children.  His nurturing spirit extended outside of his household and Horace was always willing to be of help to others.  Reared in the home of a Reverend and having developed a personal relationship with Christ, he shared the word of God with his son and daughters and believed in power of prayer .... a true prayer warrior.  A loving brother and son, he and his family spent time in Virginia with his siblings, nieces and nephews.  Only a multitude of loving and funny stories would equate to the number of people and lives that "Jackson" impacted.

Those left to carry on his legacy are five children: son, Horace L. Jackson, Jr. (Sandy) of Williamstown, NJ , daughters, Linda Washington of Chesapeake, VA., Brenda Bullock of Sicklerville, NJ, Wanda White of Gloucester Twp., NJ, and Milissa Shade of Gloucester Twp., NJ; fourteen grandchildren, CJ, Horace III, Brain, Gage, Blaze, Bryce, Miles, Blaine, Adore, Tanner, Jaelise, Bailey, Jamison and Jensen.  Others left to cherish his memory include his siblings, Pernell C. Jackson of Phildelphia, PA, Annie L. Smith (James) of Chesapeake, VA, Linda A . Nicholes (Allen) of Chesapeake, VA., the Honorable Raymond A. Jackson (The Honorable Ret. Gwendolyn J. Jackson) of Norfolk, VA, Fred L. Jackson (Vonetta) of Chesapeake, VA; two sister-in-laws; Edna H. Jackson of Norfolk, VA and Patricia C. Jackson of Chesapeake, VA.  He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and a multitude of friends.  His relentless spirit and influence will remain with us always.
