Obituary of M. Vernice Morman

Please share a memory of M. Vernice to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Vernice was born June 11, 1928, and departed this life on October 12, 2017. She was the last of seven children born to Sidney and Hallie Scott.  Vernice Scott grew up on her family’s farm in Alton, Virginia. Vernice lost both her parents at a young age and was raised by her sister, Beatrice. This environment nurtured her love for family, as evidenced by her passion for Family Reunions and gatherings.

After graduating from Fayetteville State University in North Carolina, she sought summer employment in Atlantic City where she ultimately met and married Richard Miller Morman, Sr. The marriage produced four children: Marsha, Joni, Suzette, and Richard, Jr. A true matriarch, she devotedly loved, cared for, and supported her family.

Relocating to Atlantic City, she continued her teaching career for over 35 years until retiring from West Side Complex. Once retired, she enjoyed traveling with the Golden Circle and 101 Women, as well as participating in other civic organizations.

Never straying far from her farming roots, Vernice enjoyed “piddling” around in her yard. She loved God’s awesome display of nature in the vast beauty of the landscaping around the house. She delighted in watching the growth of flowers, shrubs, and trees from the comfort of her kitchen table and often invited others to share her faith, food, fun, and fellowship there.

Vernice’s faith was the foundation of her life. Accepting Jesus as her Savior at a young age, she joined and served at Shiloh Baptist and Heavensway Baptist Churches for over 60 years. She was diligent to “train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it”. She was blessed with that legacy continuing with her grandchildren.

Loving physical activity, Vernice joined the Life Center in Egg Harbor Township, where she participated 4 days a week in healthy exercises and served as an inspiration to much younger members. She firmly believed good health was a gift to be cherished and lived a disciplined life to support that belief.

She leaves to celebrate her life, Marsha (Ervin), Joni, Suzette, and Richard, Jr.; four grandchildren, and a host of family and friends who will miss her.

She is predeceased by her husband, Richard; and her grandson, Jared Morman.
