Obituary of Marion Peters

Marion Peters was born on March 20, 1928. He was the only child born to Anna Mae Lowery and James Peters in Savannah, Georgia. He spent many loving years in Savannah with his Aunt Bessie along with his dear cousins Nancy, Lamar, Johnny and Raymond. As a child Marion attended the Savannah School System. After high school he worked as a life guard at the local community pool where in 1947 he met the love of his life, Pauline Edwards. Both being only children dreamed of having a big family who loved each other unequivocally. Marion served in the United States Army with the rank of Corporal from 1950 to 1953 where he served as a Communications Operator. In 1953, Marion and Pauline were married and purchased their first home at 47 W. Sharpmack Street in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pete, as he was known to many, along with his wife, purchased land in Chesilhurst where they worked together to build their dream home to rear their children in 1963. Under Mayor Anthony Forgone, Marion served as the first Police Chief as the community began to grow. Soon after moving to Chesilhurst, Pete and Pauline joined Grant A. M. E. Church under Rev. George Jenkins. Marion served as a Trustee and Usher for many years. As the church population grew and the church deteriorated it was decided to build a new church. Marion and Rev. Alvin Stokes designed the present edifice of Grant A. M. E. Church. Marion has always been a hard worker. While living in Pennsylvania, he worked at Suburban Station as an elevator operator. While working there he met Russell Broscious and became Russell's weekend landscaper and all around Mr. Fix-it. When he moved his family to Chesilhurst he moved his employment to Camden Lime Company and worked as a Yard Maintenance Supervisor, while still maintaining his relationship with Russell. He trained his sons who later helped to maintain Russell's property. Being industrious, Marion started his own cleaning business where he worked in the evenings after his day job with his sons. As a member of the Teamsters Union 676, he retired after 25 years of service from Camden Lime Company. Marion then continued to work full and part-time jobs afterward keeping him busy. With the passing of his wife Pauline in 2009, Marion redefined his life and moved along with his son Erick to Penuelas, Puerto Rico. He enjoyed the warm weather, beaches and crystal clear waters. He enjoyed his yearly visits to New Jersey each summer to spend time with his family. After a brief illness, Marion departed this life on March 28, 2016. Marion leaves behind many friends and loved ones who will truly miss him. His children: William, Erick, Marianna (David), Cynthia (Kedar), Mark (Zena) and Rodney (Melissa); 22 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
