Sara Marcella Nichols was the sixth child of a family of seven children born in Hamilton Township, New Jersey to the late Reverend Doctor Rutherford V. Nichols and the late Josephine Virginia Colvin Nichols on November 18, 1928. She departed this life Friday, March 29, 2013. She was a member of St. Matthews Baptist Church, where she joined and was baptized at a young age under the pastorate of her late father. She received her early education in Williamstown, New Jersey, while during the summers at the Bordentown Training School to further her biblical knowledge. Sara attended Glassboro High School in Glassboro, NJ. She was actively involved in drama club, debate club, and enjoyed basketball. She was honored as the salutatorian when she graduated high school in 1947. She enrolled in the Glassboro State Teachers College (Rowan University) to pursue a degree in Education. She was the treasurer of her class for the entire four years of college. She graduated from the Glassboro State Teachers College in 1951 with a Bachelor's degree in Education. Sara served as a public school teacher in Long Branch, New Jersey for over 30 years. Her first teaching position was at the Liberty Street School. When the school closed, she transferred to Lenna Conrow Elementary School and worked there until retirement. Sara was inducted into The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. PI Chapter in 1952. She was an active member and served as Basileus from 1966-1969. She was a "Life Member" and remained an active participant. She was also a member of the Williamstown Civic Group and Monroe Township Republican Club. When her health prohibited her from attending functions and events, even in her absence, she would send her support and guests to participate in the organization's annual functions. She was preceded in death by brothers, R. Colvin and Edward V. Nichols; brother-in-law, Carlyle Franklin, Sr., sisters, Mirrian N. Franklin and Lillian J. Nichols and nephew, Barry J. Banks. Sara is survived by sister, A. Virginia N.B. Frieson, brother, Fletcher R. Nichols, nephews, nieces, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends.
