James Walter Bryan was born on August 29, 1938, to the late James Lee and Katherine (Johnston) Bryan in Philadelphia, PA.  James affectionately known as “Sug”, “Jimmy” and “Brother” was the second of three children from this union.  Sug is predeceased by his wife Shirley J. (Scarlett) Bryan; sister, Jacqueline L. Davis and brother, Gregory R. Bryan. Sug was educated in the Philadelphia school system having graduated from Dobbins Technical High School. After graduation, Sug enlisted in the United States Air Force. Sug served his country diligently and received an Honorary Discharge in September of 1959.  After the completion of his military service, Sug sought employment at the United States Mint (Department of Treasury) in Philadelphia, PA. During his tenure with the Mint, Sug received several awards such as Outstanding Performance and Superior Performance to name a few.

Sug rose through the ranks at the Mint culminating in his final position as Special Coins General Foreman. Sug retired from the Mint on December 30, 1994. It was during his career at the Mint that he met his soulmate, Shirley J. Scarlett.  After a long courtship, Sug and Shirley entered into holy matrimony on August 15, 2008, blending their two families.  His proudest moment in life was when he became a dad in March of 1988. James Jr. was the apple of his eye. He was a very loving and devoted dad and was very proud of his son. Sug’s greatest passion was spending time with his family. He would do anything for his family.  There wasn’t an event or occasion that he missed. He was the ultimate cool Uncle and friend and was always dressed to the nines. His other passion was cruising with his club members yearly and attending their monthly meetings. Sug and Shirley were platinum members of several cruise lines.

Sug leaves to mourn his memory his son, James Walter Bryan, Jr. (India); two stepdaughters; Jacqueline Scott (Barry) and Tara Pittman (Derrick); three stepsons, Richard Scarlett, Jr. (Anita),
Ronald Scarlett and Robert Scarlett(Helen); two devoted nieces; Juanita Vickers (Coy) and Judith Winbush (Anthony); two nephews; John Davis (Antoinette) and James Davis; grandchildren, A’mour and Jace; great-grandchildren, great-nieces; great-nephews; great-great nieces and great-great nephews; cousin Arthur Washington (June) and a host of other family members and friends.
