Leroy Edward Gathers was born on January 14, 1935, to Alease Tucker and Hilliard Gathers. He entered eternal rest on June 2, 2023. He was born in Manhattan, New York and moved to McKenney Virginia at a very early age. He attended elementary school in McKenney and graduated from Dinwiddie County High School. After graduation, Leroy joined the U. S. Army, serving as a psychiatric medic. Leroy switched his occupational specialty to recruiting and served his country faithfully for 21 years. After completing his military duty, Leroy attended Columbia College and graduated with an Associate of Arts degree. Leroy was a former Mason for 27 years.
Everywhere Leroy went, he made friends. People knew him well and he was always cracking jokes. He was an avid golfer and fisherman, traveling with friends for various golf tournaments and fishing trips. For all of those who knew Leroy, they know his favorite slogan!
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rev. Cynthia L. Gathers, a granddaughter, Miss Joh’Nette D. Gathers, 2 brothers-in-law, Mr. Paul Faust, and Mr. Lawrence Spruel, and 2 sisters-in-law, Mrs. Anna Faust, and Mrs. Peggy Butler.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Wilhelmina Gathers, 3 Daughters, Ruth A. Nuby (John), Tessa Howard, and Alice Woods. 2 sons, Jesse Howard and Raiford Smith. 12 Grandchildren, and 15 Great Grand Children, 1 sister, 5 brothers-in-law’s, 8 sisters-in-law’s, numerous cousins, relatives and friends, a devoted cousin, Mrs. Helen Moss, and 2 bonus sisters, Patricia Green and Diane Lewis.
