Quietly and Peacefully, on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, Almighty God, in His infinite wisdom, mercy and grace gently closed the eyes of our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother Bernice Doris McKay as she entered into His eternal rest. Bernice Doris McKay, daughter of the late David Hooper Johnson and Elizabeth Gaddis Johnson, was born April 13, 1926. Bernice was educated in the Camden Public School System. Bernice was the first black salesperson to work at Wanamaker's Department Store in the Stationary Department. She was a entrepreneur, Furrier, own and operated R&B Grocer in New York City and she also worked for the State of New Jersey as a Health Inspector. Bernice met and married Louis McKay, Jr. in 1975. He was the husband of the late Billy Holiday of “Lady Sings The Blues”. Bernice was preceded in death by her late husband Louis McKay, Jr. and son George R. Yancey. She leaves to treasure her memories; two sons: Gary F. Johnson, Sr. (Antoinette) and John S. Yancey; 6 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild and host of nephews and cousins.
