Obituary of Darnell Henry Johnson

Darnell Henry Johnson, 68, of Atlantic City, New Jersey went home to be with the Lord on October 15, 2020, surrounded by his wife and family at home. Darnell, AKA Johnny and Uncle D, was a beautiful person. He had a heart of gold and a smile that could light up a room. He was a die hard Eagle, Sixers and Phillies fan. He was a comedian, quick with words, quiet and laid back, and he loved his family and friends. He attended Union Baptist Temple during his youth. He graduated from Atlantic City High School in 1970 and afterward, he attended Atlantic Community College for two years. He was employed at Chalfonte-Haddon Hall which later became Resorts International Hotel Casino for 30 years as a bellman. He left there for a better opportunity at Tropicana Hotel Casino. He was employed there for 25 years as a bellman until he retired on August 1, 2017. Twice he was Employee of the Month at Tropicana, and once at Resorts. He was a very dedicated employee and loved by his co-workers. He is predeceased by his parents, Henry and Peggy Robinson ; his maternal grandparents, Joseph and Mary Hollingsworth; uncles, Harold (Margaret) Hollingsworth, Pierre (Soundra) Hollingsworth, Allison Hollingsworth, Herman Hollingsworth, and Jake Blackwell; his aunt, Vernon Blackwell; cousins, Geffrey Blackwell and Brenda Springs; in-laws, Roylee Leggette, Frank “Shaka” Roberts, Roosevelt Leggette, Grady Roberts and Yvonne R oberts. He is also preceded in death by his childhood friend, Steven Hicks. He is survived by his wife, friend and companion of 49 years, Grace E. Roberts-Johnson; two sons, Donnell Ali (Jimmeia) Roberts of North Carolina, and Jamar (Settia) Roberts, Sr., of Mays Landing; eight grandchildren, Mia, Satiya, Jamar, Jr., KeShawn, Terik, Jaiden, Deija and Elijah; three great grandchildren; one sister, Deborah Sewell of Atlantic City; aunts, Josie Hollingsworth and Alice Hollingsworth; favorite cousins, Renee Blackwell and Dwayne (Paula) Blackwell; godchildren, Saleema Barnes and Quinn McLaughlin; In-laws, James (Ann) Leggette, Leon (Jackie) Roberts, Ronald (Vanessa) Roberts, Shirley Boyd, Diane (Aaron) Mitchell, Phyllis Roberts, Tracy Walker, and Nancy Leggette; special uncle, Eddie McLaurin; and a host of nephews, nieces, longtime friends, Rufus and Sandra Freeman, James "Lit" (Vera) McNeal, Howard Spellman, Ray Johnson and his longtime friends at Tropicana Atlantic City.
