Obituary of Mary R Streater
Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mary R. Streater was born on August 14, 1959 to Adelaide and Henry Streater, in Camden, New Jersey. Our Heavenly Father called her home to Him on Saturday July 16, 2016.
Mary grew up in North Camden and attended Camden City Schools. Later in life, she worked towards getting her GED.
In 1978, Mary was blessed with a daughter Keisha, whom she loved dearly. They moved to Philadelphia in 1982 and Mary resided in the city for the next 34 years.
In her formative years, Mary was spiritually influenced by her Great-Grandmother Selma Smith, a strong Christian woman and life-long member of the Bright Hope Baptist Church, in Philadelphia, where Mary attended with her. She was introduced to Jesus Christ by “Momma” and this led to her acceptance of Him as Lord and Savior later in life.
After a long struggle with addiction, Mary made the decision to change her life. With God by her side, she joined the local NA group and began a new life. 2016 was a special year for Mary, because she celebrated 25 years of “Being Clean”.
As she stayed committed to her new life, Mary became a Mentor to several persons struggling with addiction. She was chosen to represent her local group at several conventions in Philadelphia, Maryland and Virginia. Helping and encouraging others to clean up their lives became her daily ministry.
Mary diligently studied the Word and tried to live her life accordingly. Her favorite song was “Amazing Grace”. Her sudden passing has left a void in the hearts of many.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, and her sister, Adelaide “Sister” Streater.
She leaves to cherish her memory; daughter Keisha, special niece, Chanelle Streater-Timms, Keisha’s god-mother, Jeane Butler, sister, Robin Hamilton, aunts, Delores Streater-Logan, Grace Streater-Payton (Charles), E. Mancerah Higgs and Zelmar Ross, uncles, Clarence, Pierson and Gerald Streater, several nieces, nephews, devoted cousins, other family loved ones, friends, her NA family and all of her Winton Street friends.
